EXAM QUESTION
Skulls and bones have been used in Art and Photography is a variety of ways since the drawn man. Pieter Claesz used Vanitias objects to convey a narrative in his work; Sam Taylor Wood has used photographic film to document the transfusion of death to decay and Francois Robert uses bones to motivate the fear of death in political campaigns.
Project Proposal:
Alyson Belcher likes to take photographs of the woods, as the woods can be a very quiet and calm place to be, but also a very beautiful place as well.
Francois Robert is interested in bones, he uses bones to create images and words. He wants his work to stand out
My intention is to take Alyson Belcher and Francois Robert's work and try to create a death atmosphere. I will do this by placing the bones in plants and bushes to make it look like it is hidden. To do this I will need to get the correct focus settings and to make sure I good light angle, and also the position I put the camera angle at.
Pieter Claesz was born in Berchem. He as a German painter who achieved a striking simplicity and atmospheric quality in still-life representations. Most of his pictures represents death.
Sam Taylor-Johnson began working in photography, film, and video in the early 1990s. she was born in March 4, 1967 (age 49) in London. At the age of sixteen, she enrolled in an art school in Hastings, later moving back to London to attend Goldsmiths College. After graduating in 1990, she worked as a bartender and as a dresser at the Royal Opera House, this latter experience would influence her work's unabashed theatricality.
Francois Robert was born in January 26, 1951 (age 65 years), Paris, France. He likes to create words and pictures out of bones trying out different shapes to see what would work. The black background makes the white stand out more.
This image shows a candle stick with smoke coming off of it with a skull and a book next to it. The skull could represent death and the candle could mean that it is dark in the room and that there is light needed but it keeps going out, the eyes could mean that someone could be watching but nobody could see that. The book might mean that it full of adventures of things that happened every day or week.
This image is showing that over time the fruit is getting old mold on it. Fruit clearly doesn't last long. you wouldn't want to eat this. Sam Taylor-Johnson has done other things like this on more food and some animals too.
Francois Robert likes creating words out of bones, he did this out of bones because bones are related to skulls. it also tells us that it has something to do with death.
The brightness is too high in these photos. if was going to do this again i would take more time and focus on the lightening and the placement.
This photo is very blurry. It is definitely not the best one that I have taken as the other photos. I would rather take this again, and think about what to position the lighting source and the camera at, to get a better angled photo. I am slowly getting to the point where it is at a good quality photograph. Compared to the other pictures, I know that it is the worst one I have taken. I will need to take more time when producing this kind of work next time.
I was originally going to take photographs with a skull and bones next to the skull, but I decided to change it around. There was black paper underneath this skull to make to stand out more, I chose to take photos of two different skulls because, their is more detail on it that bones have and they are completely different shapes. I used; f/7.1 1/20 ISO 100 to get these photo. There was one light source, from the top left. Next time I will add more light source to get better lighting and better angles on these photos. Also next time I could attempt to do my origional idea, adding in the bones. I think that this photoshoot went well, but it could of gone better.

Experimenting with Alyson Belchers Work:
For the past ten years, Alyson Belcher has been exploring the relationship between stillness and movement by using a pinhole camera to photograph the human figure. Her photographs include an ongoing series of self-portraits as well as collaborations with dancers and movement artists. Alyson has been teaching at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco since 2000.Her work seems to be very calm and quite place to be.
Pieter Clasez and Francios Robert mixed together:
Experimenting with bones.
This picture is probably the best one that I took in that photo-shoot. The lighting angle was okay, focusing on the skull, not anything else. Black background so its not standing out. next time I could add bones to the side, to make it look more interesting. still has a good amount of detail, but I think it need more.
FINAL PHOTO SHOOT:
I have decided to choose this photo, as my final piece. The bone is squashed between two different plants. I like it this way, because it blends well with each other. I combined Francois Roberts and Alyson Belchers work together. I used a bone and surrounding plants and bushes to create this photograph. I thought that these colours would go together to get a death atmosphere. The work that i have created is very peaceful. There was something that caught my eye when i was studying both artists, and i thought both artists would go well together. Francois Roberts and Alyson Belcher, both have an interesting mood to there work. With this work, I wanted to show death but i also wanted to show it being surrounded by nature. I like how i positioned and angled the camera to get this image.
Exemplar Statement.
In this work I have tried to combine both of my artists together. I have used the textures from Francios Roberts and Alyson Belcher. I really like these elements all combined together. I set the camera settings to: ISO 100, Shutter Speed 1/125, Aperture F5.6. I really like this work that I have created, and i am happy with the final outcome. I really like the colours and the brightness of it. And also the positioning of the objects. I am very happy with the shapes, and the closeness of the zoom. However if i were to do this again, I would possibly do a series of images but, i am happy with the way it turned out.
